One of the things that makes vintage wallpaper so interesting is the vast array of paper types and printing methods that have been used to create it. With all of the varied designs and techniques, we end up with so many interesting types of wallpaper: vinyls, flocks, mylars, hand-prints, kraft papers, metallics (not to mentional traditional paper wallpaper). It's no wonder we adore it! Recently we came across an exciting new-to-our-collection type of vintage wallpaper...cork wallpaper!
These awesome cork wallpapers (yes, that's real cork!) were hand-made in Japan during the 70s. The papers are remarkably lightweight, made from thin pieces of cork arrayed on top of rice paper.
Some of the papers even have a metallic gold background, making them twice as nice.
The hand-made nature of the wallpaper and the cork material itself create beautiful variations in the color and texture of the pattern, which is a welcome contrast to the uniformity and precision of manufactured papers (both in vintage wallpapers and the papers made today).
All of these patterns are available in our Retro Wallpaper Etsy store by the yard, but they are in very limited quantities. Get them before they're gone!
